Weight Loss Paso Robles

At San Luis Sports Therapy (SLST) Paso Robles, the team of highly qualified and trained physical therapists and fitness professionals personally coach overweight and obese people to achieve amazing results in their health and lifestyle. They can help you achieve this by not only losing weight, but also increasing physical strength and endurance, improving aerobic capacity, flexibility and balance.

Here are some articles and videos we would like to share with all of our patients and fitness clients.  Hopefully some of this content you will find useful in your search regarding weight loss at San Luis Sports Therapy and Fitness Center in Paso Robles.  Recent statistics presented by the Centers for Disease Control indicate more than two-thirds of Americans are overweight; it is not surprising that over 40% are searching for online weight loss advice, techniques or programs.   A simple online search for weight loss programs will offer more than two hundred million results in less than a second.  The reality is most people then become overwhelmed and frustrated that they are not finding the quickest (most efficient and effective) long term weight loss program that is ideal for their individual circumstances.  Feeling frustrated and overwhelmed stops many overweight and obese individuals from even taking the first steps toward their weight loss goals.

Maybe you think you know exactly what you need to do to achieve your weight loss goals and are waiting for life to calm down before getting started. Yet, that time never comes and your struggle to achieve your weight loss and nutrition goals continues.

Maybe you have followed this diet, that health guru or simply follow exactly what your close friend (who looks fit and healthy) has proven to be so successful?   Weight loss seems like a “simple” equation, right?  Simply, burn more calories than you eat.  Why with such a “simple” equation are so many people still searching for the magic weight loss formula?  Do you continue to struggle with achieving your weight loss and nutrition goals?

SLST offers many components other weight loss programs in the area fail to offer, such as our rehabilitation and lifestyle enhancement programs including both guided exercise and nutrition coaching.  These programs are ideal for obese and overweight individuals who are recovering from an injury, surgery, years of inactivity or those looking to establish healthy nutritional habits and enhance physical activities in their lives. These programs are also ideal for participating in activities you may have been missing out on, such as attending family BBQ’s, gardening, playing with children or grandchildren, golfing, biking, hiking or any other activity they may participate in. Ultimately, SLST provides obese and overweight individuals with MOVMENT FOR LIFE to maintain functional independence, as they age, which affords them the ability to live the life they have always envisioned.

Not all weight loss clinics are created equal!  Some weight loss centers are just in the business of making money, however San Luis Sports Therapy likes to take a whole body, individualized and comprehensive approach to helping obese and overweight individuals live a healthier, happier and more vital lifestyle.  When looking for a good weight loss program, it is important to consider many things.

Listed below are some guidelines that can be used to find outstanding weight loss programs near Paso Robles:

  1. Make up your mind on things which are most important to you.

Before you decide to choose a weight loss clinic, you should first really know what your needs are as far as weight reduction is concerned.  This determines the type of weight loss program that you’ll want to select.

For instance, if you are looking to restore or enhance your overall quality of life with weight loss workouts including strength, balance and fat burning metabolic training; or whether you have previous injuries or ongoing health conditions that have limited your ability to be physically active in the past, then it is certainly preferable to choose a weight loss center with direct access to doctors of physical therapy (musculoskeletal injury and movement specialists), certified personal trainers and certified nutritionists, all under one roof, taking an integrated and individualized approach to your nutrition and exercise program.

  1. Do not forget to look around

When choosing a weight loss clinic, it is beneficial to do some research first and compare the cost versus benefits, and the services that are offered in a weight loss program.  Look at the facility’s reviews online.  Get referrals or recommendations from friends, family or your Doctor.

Using this approach, you’ll be much more likely to select a weight loss center that meets your needs and will help you achieve your goals.

  1. Consider your pocketbook

There is a wide range of fees that weight loss centers charge, so make sure to consider what your budget is and which facility will offer the most comprehensive and affordable program to help you meet your weight loss goals and needs.

Take into account exactly what you need from the weight loss program and balance that with the cost of the program.   You maybe have been a member of gym with low monthly price and failed to achieve any results.  Maybe you’ve been enticed by “boot camp” or “detox-cleansing” type programs promising you quick and dramatic transformations.  Whiles these training facilities and weight reduction methods may work for certain people, one-size-fits-all models simply won’t address the exercise and nutrition needs of individuals with long term health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure or arthritis.   If you are looking to achieve results, rehabilitate from an injury or surgery, restore your flexibility and strength or to enhance your movement to prevent injury and perform better in life you will require an exercise and nutrition program. Our programs are designed by a team of fitness and medical professionals including a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Nutritionist and Doctor of Physical Therapy who are also Orthopedic Specialists, your individual needs and insurance coverage will have a major impact on what the cost will be. We offer a complimentary verification of benefits to determine what your insurance will cover.

  1. Know where your hard-earned money goes

If you sign up for all the “bells and whistles” make sure that you are utilizing every aspect that you are paying for.  Just be sure that whatever sort of weight loss program you’ve chosen, you are aware of exactly what you are getting.

  1. Be mindful of the physical attributes and characteristics of the weight loss center that you would like to enroll in.

Be sure the weight loss center that you have chosen is welcoming, clean and provides you with the individualized and comprehensive program that you need and want.  Consider the convenience of having everything you need to restore and/or enhance your body, all in one location, like what we have to offer at San Luis Sports Therapy Paso Robles.

Ensure also that your weight loss program provides lifestyle enhancement, including workouts that are being designed especially for you. Ensure that there are nutrition guidelines to address your desired goals. Whether your goals are to build muscle mass, boost your energy, fat loss or any rehabilitation you may need to restore your ability to move pain free.  SLST’s weight loss program is comprehensive and progressive. This means that we will be addressing any movement imbalances throughout your entire body to ensure you’re not focusing only on localized areas or starving yourself.  This style of a weight loss, where you focus only on isolated areas of the body and trying to permanently eliminate food from your diet is unrealistic.  Newer evidence based weight loss programs are individualized and comprehensive considering your limiting factors – the things that stand between you and reaching your goal.  Limiting factors when considering weight loss as a goal may include, but are not limited to; genetic makeup, physical activity patterns, physiology, mindset, and nutrition.  Therefore, working on a seemingly unrelated region of your body or aspect of health may have a huge impact on your desired results, especially if overlooked. Isolated weight loss programs can be detrimental to your long term quality of life and leave you feeling frustrated.

These tips will help you find the best weight loss clinic Paso Robles has to offer as well as assist you in selecting a fitness center that will most benefit you.

Here are some weight loss videos about who we are and what we do:

When does body weight become a concern?

Body mass index (BMI) is the weight of a person in kilograms divided by their height in meters squared, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control.  The BMI measurement is a ratio of body weight to height, and does not measure body fat directly.  BMI does show strong correlations to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.  Using BMI as an easy to perform and inexpensive method for screening your weight category is a quick first step and familiar to most.

BMI (kg/m2)
Underweight Below 18.5
Normal 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9
Obesity 30.0 and above

When an individual is categorized as overweight (BMI greater than 25 kg/m2) or obese (greater than 30 kg/m2), they become a risk for developing more severe and chronic diseases including but not limited to cardiovascular disease, Diabetes Mellitus,  thyroid dysfunction and osteoarthritis.  Obesity has also been correlated to certain types of cancers including:  esophageal, pancreatic, colon/rectal, breast (after menopause), endometrial (lining of the uterus), kidney, thyroid and gall bladder according to the National Institute of Cancer.

Not sure you would benefit from a healthy weight loss program?

Check your weight category using this quick online on the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s BMI calculator  or using an BMI chart

Limitations of BMI

BMI as a sole measure for determining health risk factors does have limitations.  In those who have lost muscle mass, such as seniors and underweight individuals BMI can underestimate body fat.  It can also overestimate the body fat of a fit or athletic individual, therefore using an additional waist circumference measurement screens for possible health risk.  The CDC along with the American Heart Association define a waist circumference for women of greater than 35 inches and for men greater than 40 inches indicates elevated abdominal fat increasing risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM).  Determine whether your waist circumference reduces your health risk factor by accurately measuring your waist circumference just above the hipbones after breathing out.  If your BMI is 25 – 29.9 kg/m2 and your waist circumference is less than 35 inches for women and less than 40 inches for men your risk factor for CVD and DM is reduced.

What is healthy weight loss?

In a fast pace society, naturally overweight and obese individuals desire quick rewarding results with their weight reduction efforts.  It is true; some participants may lose 10 pounds in the first week.  Consider whether this is a sustainable rate of weight loss, what type of weight (muscle or fat) is really being lost and in the long term is this going to create a slower metabolism?  Rapid weight reduction while satisfying, potentially causes a rebound effect in the long run in which more weight is gained back than was actually lost creating a net result of weight gain.  Leaving you heavier than when the weight loss program hand begun.  Asking, “What is healthy weight loss?” may seem like a silly question but, the reality of the situation is most people need to be reminded of the definition of healthy weight loss.  Healthy sustainable weight loss creates a negative energy balance by increasing calories burned through physical activity and reducing caloric intake; get moving and eat less.  There’s that “simple” formula again.  The keywords here are “healthy and sustainable”.  A healthy and sustainable rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds of fat loss per week.  In order to achieve one pound of fat loss per week, create a 3500 calorie deficit per week by decreasing 300 calories a day from your nutrition in a seven day period (Ex. 2 sodas) and increase energy expenditure by 300 calories per day, four to five days per week via a metabolic exercise program designed especially for you.  For sustainable long term weight management a true change in body composition is desired to establish an active metabolism in lean muscle.  Remember, not all body weight is created equally, a pound of fat versus a pound of muscle, when the goal is to increase your metabolism.  Slow, steady lifestyle habit changes are the most effective and efficient methods for long term weight reduction and weight management programs.

Myth of weight loss if strictly by the numbers

In theory…if you weigh 200 pounds and reduce intake by 1,000 calories per day — you should lose 2 pounds per week — or 104 pounds per year.  If the theory continues then by the end of the second year, you should weigh a mere -8 pounds.

Take the focus off the numbers

A shift in focus from your weight, those darn numbers on the scale, may actually help you to achieve your weight loss goals. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. Instead of using a scale to gauge your progress, consider using a few of these recommended measures:

– increased energy levels

– improved mood

– ability to move better

– improved blood chemistry levels (contact your physician for regular blood work and health screening*)

– the ability to fit into clothing that was once too tight.

Weight Loss Nutrition Guidelines

The amount of instantaneous nutrition and diet information quickly becomes confusing, maybe even overwhelming.  In searching for the “secret” to weight loss keep in mind the foundation of any weight loss program must include healthy and unprocessed whole food choices and consistency with lifelong nutrition habits.  On a daily basis eat healthy to feed muscle and help shed fat; speeding up the body’s basal resting metabolic rate which helps burn more calories while at rest.  Nutrition is the most significant limiting factor in determining successful weight loss and long term weight management.

Ultimately, find a team of health care professionals, including both a Physician and Certified Nutritionist, to build a customized nutrition program helping you achieve success on the journey to a healthier you.  Your nutrition coach at San Luis Sports Therapy and Fitness in Paso Robles benefits you by keeping you motivated, safe and focused on making tough lifestyle changes required for long term weight loss and maintenance.

Weight Loss Exercise Recommendations

Exercise for obese and overweight individuals recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine for weight loss is between 150 to 250+ minutes/week of moderate-intensity physical activity.  250+ minutes/week of moderate-intensity physical activity will most likely contribute to greater weight reduction and prevent weight regain.  A weight loss of as little as 2-3 percent of excess body weight leads to health improvements and reduces chronic disease risk factors according to the ASCM.  Moderate-intensity physical activity for weight loss exercises should include weight training, endurance or aerobic physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.  Weight training consists of 8-10 muscle strengthening exercises, completing 10-15 repetitions of each exercise on two to three non-consecutive days per week and flexibility exercises to improve range of motion 2-3 days per week.

Senior Weight Loss programs for overweight and obese individuals, over 60 plus years of age, focus on neuromotor control or “functional fitness training” exercises two to three days per week for 20-30 minutes per day and were added to include exercises for balance, agility, coordination, gait, proprioception and combined movements. These exercises are to improve overall physical function and prevent falls in older adults.  A safe and effective senior weight loss physical activity plan considers health care needs and facilitates success when guided and designed by the individual’s team of health care providers including a physician, doctor of physical therapy and certified personal trainers.

The one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss does not address the needs of individuals with long term health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure or arthritis.  Weight loss workouts integrate metabolic fitness, strength, flexibility, balance training and aerobic fitness considering an individual’s general health history, current physical capacity and ease of movement.  Nutrition coaching essential for success in a weight loss program addresses food selection, nutrient timing, portion control and social support.  Long term exercise and nutrition habits designed especially to meet obese and overweight individuals’ needs and goals are a must; whether you are looking to maintain your independence, to boost your energy or to simply feel your best as you age allowing you to enjoy Movement for Life®.

Fitness Goal

Motivated and ready to begin an exercise program, though find you are on a tight budget?

Take advantage of the free outdoors by beginning a walking program; strive for walking 10,000 steps per day, approximately 5 miles per day.  Note walking in short bouts throughout the day is beneficial to your health.  A minimum walking bout of 10 minutes is recommended for cardiovascular benefit.

Begin slowly, especially if you have been inactive and sedentary, and add steps in increments of 500 steps per week.  If you are currently averaging 3,000 steps per day; add an additional 500 steps per day each week bringing you to 3,500 steps per day.  Slowly, work toward achieving 10,000 steps per day.
