Senior Fitness Paso Robles

Here are some articles and videos we would like to share with all of you, our patients and fitness clients.  Hopefully you will find some of this content useful in your search regarding senior fitness at San Luis Sports Therapy and Fitness Center in Paso Robles.  The average mindset on aging among Americans is that beginning at 50 years old individuals are on a slippery slope of decline into old age and death-every year a little fatter, slower, weaker and in more pain.  Scientific studies prove that optimizing one’s fitness level; one can actually reverse the effects of aging and avoid chronic medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes.

At San Luis Sports Therapy (SLST) the team of highly qualified and trained fitness and physical therapy professionals personally coach seniors to achieve amazing results in their health and lifestyle by increasing physical strength and endurance, improving aerobic capacity, flexibility and balance.

SLST offers many components none of the other senior fitness programs in the area offer, such as our rehabilitation and lifestyle enhancement programs.  These programs are ideal for seniors recovering from an injury or surgery or those looking to enhance activities in their life such as gardening, running, horseback riding, golfing, biking, softball or any other sports they may participate in.   Ultimately, SLST provides seniors with MOVMENT FOR LIFE to maintain functional independence as they age which affords them the ability to live the retirement life they have always envisioned.

Many of you may have experienced or guessed not all senior fitness centers are created equal. San Luis Sports Therapy and Fitness Center is different, we like to take a whole body individualized and comprehensive approach to helping individuals 60-plus live a healthier, happier and more vital lifestyle.  When looking for a good senior fitness center, it is important to consider many things.

Listed below are some guidelines that can be used to find outstanding senior fitness centers near Paso Robles:

  1. Decide on which things are most important to you.

Before you decide to choose a senior fitness center, you should first really know what your needs are as far as fitness is concerned. This determines the type of senior exercise program that you’ll want to select.

For instance, if you are looking to restore or enhance your overall quality of life with senior fitness workouts including strength and balance training; or whether you have previous injuries or ongoing health conditions that have limited your ability to be physically active in the past, then it is certainly preferable to choose a senior fitness center with direct access to doctors of physical therapy (musculoskeletal injury specialists), all under one roof, taking an integrated and individualized approach to your fitness program.

  1. Do not forget to look around

It may seem so cliché, however it really pays to be a person who shops around before picking something. So, when choosing a senior fitness center, it is always best to go and do some research first and get to compare the costs, benefits, and the services that are offered in a senior fitness program.  Look at the facility’s reviews; get referrals or recommendations from friends or family.

Using this approach, you’ll be much more likely to select a senior fitness center that meets your needs.

  1. Consider your pocketbook

There is a wide range of fees that senior fitness centers charge, so make sure to consider what your budget is and which facility will offer the most comprehensive and affordable program within your budget

Take into account exactly what you need from the senior fitness program and balance that with the cost of the program.   You maybe have been a member of gym with low monthly price and failed to achieve any results.  Maybe you’ve been enticed by “boot camp” or “dance” type programs promising you quick and dramatic transformations.  Whiles these training facilities and methods may work for some people, the one-size-fits-all approach will likely not address the need of individuals aged 60-plus.   If you need a place to work out and achieve results or if you will need to rehabilitate from an injury or surgery, restore your flexibility and strength because of inactivity or years of chronic pain, or to enhance your movement to prevent injury and perform better in life you will require a program designed by team of fitness professionals including a Certified Personal Trainer and Doctor of Physical Therapy or Orthopedic Specialists, your individual needs and insurance coverage will have an impact on what the cost will be.

  1. Know where your hard-earned money goes

If you sign up for all the “bells and whistles” make sure that you are utilizing every aspect that you are paying for.  Just be sure that whatever sort of senior fitness program you’ve chosen, you are aware of exactly what you are getting.

  1. Be mindful of the physical attributes and characteristics of the senior fitness center that you would like to enroll in.

Be sure the senior fitness center that you have chosen is welcoming, clean and provides you with the individualized and comprehensive program that you need and want.  Consider the convenience of having everything you need to restore or enhance your body and rehabilitate, all in one location, at San Luis Sports Therapy Paso Robles.

Ensure, also, that your senior fitness program provides a lifestyle enhancement program including workouts designed especially for you, nutrition to address your desired goals whether to build muscle mass, boost your energy or for fat loss, and any rehabilitation you may need to restore your ability to move pain free.  SLST’s fitness center is comprehensive and progressive; addressing any movement imbalances throughout your entire body to ensure you’re not focusing only on localized areas of your body.  This style of training isolated areas of the body in fitness is outdated.  Newer evidence based senior fitness programs are individualized and comprehensive considering regional interdependence, meaning regions of the body are linked by your musculoskeletal system.  Therefore, working on a seemingly unrelated region of your body may have a huge impact on your desired results, especially if overlooked.  Outdated fitness programs can be detrimental to your long term quality of life and leave you feeling frustrated.

These tips will help you find the best senior fitness center Paso Robles has to offer as well as assist you in selecting a senior fitness center that will most benefit you.

Fitness venue designed for men and women, 60 years, plus.

What is senior fitness?

The one-size-fits-all approach to fitness does not address the needs of individuals over the age of 60.  Senior fitness workouts integrate aerobic fitness, strength, flexibility and balance training and consider an individual’s general health history, current physical capacity and ease of movement.  Senior fitness exercises designed especially to meet your needs and goals are a must; whether you are looking to maintain your independence, to play your sport better or to simply feel amazing as you age allowing you to enjoy life.

Not sure how or where to start?

Many people become so overwhelmed when starting new exercises they may not ever take the first step.  Common barriers faced when beginning an exercise program are the fear of getting injured, feeling like there just is not enough time in the day or experiencing too much pain to even think about moving.  Before beginning any program at SLST a trained fitness consultant completes a scheduled strategy session discussing your health history, previous injuries, training history and physical capabilities to ensure you are ready for the senior fitness workouts and classes.  SLST’s team of skilled and certified personal trainers work with doctors of physical therapy to design a program especially for you based on your individual needs and goals.  If you are not sure how or where to start the right senior fitness program for you, take advantage of a complimentary, yes, free to you,  Strategy Session at the Paso Robles location of San Luis Sports Therapy Physical Therapy and Fitness Center.  Call 805.226.0975 to schedule now.  Visit online at www.slstpaso.com or drop in for a visit at 1345 Park Street Downtown Paso Robles, on the corner of 14th and Park Streets.

Senior Fitness Exercise Recommendations

Senior fitness exercise recommendations by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association include endurance or aerobic physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week at moderate intensity or 20 minutes a day, three days a week at vigorous intensity; 8-10 muscle strengthening exercises, completing 10-15 repetitions of each exercise on two to three non-consecutive days per week and flexibility exercises to improve range of motion 2-3 days per week .  Additionally, neuromotor control or “functional fitness training” exercises two to three days per week for 20-30 minutes per day were added to include exercises for balance, agility, coordination, gait, proprioception and combined movements to improve overall physical function and prevent falls in older adults.  A safe and effective senior fitness physical activity plan considers health care needs and facilitates success when guided and designed by the individual’s team of health care providers including a physician, doctor of physical therapy and certified personal trainers.

Senior Fitness Tests

A few tests to as criterion senior fitness norms indicating standards for maintaining independent living are established from a study on the Fullerton Senior Fitness Testing comparing normative data based on actual performance scores of over 7,000 men and women between the ages of 60 and 94.*

Purpose:  The test assesses leg strength and endurance.

Equipment: Sturdy straight backed chair without arm rests and a seat 17 inches high.

Procedure:  Place the chair against the wall to stabilize it for safety.  Sit in the middle of the seat, with your feet shoulder width apart, flat on the floor.  The arms are crossed at the wrists and held close to the chest.  From the sitting position, stand completely up, then completely back down, and repeat this for 30 seconds.  Count the total number of complete stands (up and down equals one stand).  If you have completed a full stand from the sitting position when the time is elapsed, the final stand is counted in the total.

Score: Number of complete chair stands in 30 seconds, reference the table below for senior fitness age and gender norms from the Fullerton Senior Fitness Test (Jones & Rikli 2002).  Rikli R.E., Jones C.J.: The development and validation of a functional fitness test for community-residing older adultsJ of Aging and Physical Activity, 1999a; 7: 129–161
