Rick Oliver
July 2015 Member of the Month!

This month we’re featuring Rick Oliver!
His dedication to his health and fitness is inspiring! Read his story below!

Rick is a graduate of Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo High Schools. Though his family traveled with his father, who was in the Air Force, attending 14 schools in 12 years, he always considered Paso Robles, where his grandparents lived, as home base. He had Virginia Peterson, Marie Bower and Glenn Speck as teachers. You may recognize these names from current schools that have all been named after these teachers! Rick and his mother has the same High School English teacher, Catherine Easterling (AKA “Easterburg”), a generation apart.

Rick landed in Paso Robles because of his grand parents and because he always liked the area. He believes it’s great for all the outdoor activities including his hobby, motorcycle racing! He also likes the heat!

Rick has one daughter, one step daughter, five (soon to be six) grandchildren and five great grandchildren!

Rick has been a member of San Luis Sports Therapy since Personal Trainer Matt was teaching the early morning classes, about five or six years now.
Rick says he has great memories of the early AM class group and the support he receives from the group members. Other highlights have included having Jen Myers and JR Felgenhauer for coaches. They provide good feedback on form and keep him on track but not needlessly distracted. Another memory Rick has is of Tammy urging a round of “butt busters” at the end of a work out routine. To quote Rick on this exercise, “Ouch!”

Something Rick considers to be one of his biggest fitness accomplishments is getting to the gym on a daily basis at 5:30 am or 6:00 am! Being consistent, doing it everyday, even when he would really rather sleep in. Reaching mini milestones he has set for himself, such as increasing weight or number of rounds of routines completed.
His current fitness goal is maintaining a good BMI and improving his MMI as well as building cardio stamina. He is trying to gain strength and stamina to allow him to be more proficient in the sport of motorcycle riding and racing. He wants to remain active in his profession and hobbies way beyond the retirement age of most others.
Rick says wanting to stay as fit as possible and enjoy life as he ages is what drives him to make nutrition and exercise a priority in his busy life. In terms of diet, he tries not to consume anything he will have to burn off later and achieve a good BMI or build muscle mass. He has cut down on sugar, no alcohol, few carbs, no bread and more protein. He also avoids sitting still too long, he keeps himself moving!

We asked Rick what he would tell people about SLST Paso. Rick said, “I tell people I know that the program at SLST Paso can be tailored to the individual’s needs. I encourage others to try SLST Paso, to set even small goals for themselves and work systematically to achieve those goals. The classes offer a good structure and a supportive atmosphere to help perspective members continue their efforts. The individualized work, with the coaches, is an excellent way to prevent overdoing it and learn good form to maximize the gains for each participant. I also mention that I owe my current state of activity level and positive energy to SLST Paso.”

We asked Rick if there was anything else he would like to share. Rick said “The gym is part of my daily routine. I would never have thought I would join a gym before I tried San Luis Sports Therapy Paso Robles. The atmosphere is not intimidating. The members are all trying to attain life fitness goals not bragging rights. The trainers and members are friendly and supportive.”
