Different forms of treatment you may receive during your treatment at San Luis Sports Therapy – Paso Robles.

All patients start with an Assessment where their Physical Therapist will determine a treatment plan specific to you and your injury as well as go over the types of treatment they will use in your treatment plan. All of our Doctors of Physical Therapy are here to help you and answer any questions you may have, they can do this in the assessment. The assessment is scheduled differently than your follow-up visits, that is to ensure your Physical Therapist will have ample time to answer all your questions and determine your treatment plan. That being said, it is best to call and schedule your assessment sooner than later as these time slots tend to fill up. We schedule our patients two weeks out in advance. Assessment

Scenario: Everyone Attending Physical Therapy

All Physical Therapists start with a detailed evaluation, including medical history. Be prepared for lots of questions and details looking for the root of the issue in order to treat the issue at its source.

Manual Therapy

Scenario: Any injury

Physical Therapists will use multiple types of manual therapy during treatment. Anything from stretching and massage to more hands-on strengthening exercises to help re-train your muscles. Joint mobilization techniques improve quality of motion, spinal alignment and eliminate pain.

Exercise

Scenario: Staying healthy during and after Physical Therapy treatment. Rehabilitating from an injury or surgery.

Staying active during your treatments and completing your Home Exercise Program (HEP) can help speed up your recovery process. Staying active and healthy after Physical Therapy can help to prevent injury requiring further Physical Therapy.

Ice

Scenario: Injuries with inflammation and swelling

Ice is beneficial to the injury treatment process. Ice can prevent and reduce inflammation following an injury by constricting the blood vessels.

Heat

Scenario: Injuries with muscular spasms and tightness

Heat will relax tight muscles decreasing pain and increasing mobility. Heat works well for soft tissues, tendons and ligaments.

Ultrasound

Scenario: Tissue Injuries, Muscle Strain and Ligament Sprain

Ultrasound generates heat deep within the muscles, this can help loosen up the muscle in preparation for manual therapy or exercise.

Traction

Scenario: Herniated Disc

Traction helps to alleviate the pain of herniated or compressed discs. It opens up the joints allowing less compression on the nerves and disc cartilage.

Electrical Stimulation

Scenario: Poor Muscle Strength, Sudden (acute) or long-lasting (chronic) pain

Electrical Stimulation provides a minor but steady electrical stimulation to the muscles. This creates contractions in muscles that are otherwise dormant. It can also help speed up the recovery process. Electrical stimulation also provides a low voltage steady electrical current for pain relief. The electricity stimulates the nerves in the effected area and sends signals to the brain that block or “scramble” normal pain signals. This stimulation of the nerves may also produce natural pain killers called endorphin’s helping to block the perception of your pain.

Aquatic Therapy

Scenario: Long-lasting, chronic back pain, post surgical conditions, fibromyalgia, arthritis

Aquatic Therapy uses the advantages of water to reduce stress on joints and muscles by minimizing the effects of gravity on the body. The treatment emphasis is to reduce pain, increase mobility and regain function.

Anodyne Infrared Therapy

Scenario: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy – nerve damage caused by diabetes in which patient may experience numbness, loss of sensation and sometimes pain.

Anodyne therapy is monochromatic infrared energy treatment for peripheral neuropathy. Anodyne in combination with exercises prescribed by a physical therapist has been proven to improve sensation, balance, decrease pain and decrease incidence of falls.
